beginning of content:

Documenting the Process of Thinking and Creating in Pre-AP Arts Classrooms

This workshop explores the ways in which teachers can help students record their creative processes and reflect on the development of their artistic works. The focus of the workshop will be on the idea that students who are reflective about their artistic choices will become more adept at building the skills in their disciplines. Participants will learn how to help students trace the evolution of their thinking including idea generation, ongoing revision and refinement, and presenting the work for a particular audience. Some of the specific activities in the workshop will include an examination of the Pre-AP Visual and Preforming Arts Course Framework, as well as work with formative assessments, inquiry-led dialogues, and exploratory critiques.

  • Examine how Pre-AP arts frameworks emphasize the opportunities for choice-making that enhance students’ abilities to think critically and creatively as artists.
  • Practice a variety of classroom routines to engage students in reflection and metacognition.
  • Apply learning to their discipline by planning daily instruction with peer feedback.
