Developing a Learner-Centered Classroom

Focus: Examining an engaging, learner-centered mathematics classroom through the lens of the Pre-AP shared principles and mathematics areas of focus—close observation and analysis, higher-order questioning, and evidence-based writing—participants will:

  • Connect the Pre-AP shared principles and mathematics areas of focus to a safe, collaborative, learner-centered classroom.
  • Collaboratively plan learner-centered mathematics activities that support student engagement through implementation of the Pre-AP shared principles and mathematics areas of focus.

Format:

  • Workshops have a maximum of 28 participants and are facilitated by Pre-AP National Faculty.

  • Virtual workshops meet twice for 2.5 hours each class.

  • In-person workshops meet on one full day.

Fee:

  • Workshops are available for private purchase by a school, district, or state. The cost of virtual workshops is $2,500 for members and $2,850 for nonmembers. The cost of in-person workshops is $4,600 for members and $5,250 for nonmembers.
  • Membership is based on an annual fee paid by your institution. Find the membership status of your institution at Home – Membership | College Board.

Using Higher-Order Questioning

Focus: The Pre-AP shared principles of higher-order questioning and academic conversation let students bridge concepts and representations to develop deep conceptual understanding. Through modeling of tiered questioning and academic conversations, participants will:

  • Connect the Pre-AP shared principle of higher order questioning to student engagement in grade-level content and the development of mathematical thinking through conceptual understanding.
  • Plan to support conceptual understanding through incorporation of higher-order questioning into daily instruction.
